Maria Durant

Event Emcee

Maria Durant, a former anchor and news personality at ABC6/FOX28, where she served for 26 years, has been appointed the new Director of Public Information at the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.  Maria is a six-time Award-winning journalist. In addition, she has received numerous Associated Press Awards.

A graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in Broadcast journalism and Political Science, little did Maria know she would someday become a news story herself.  In October 2006 Maria was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  Instead of hiding her diagnosis, Maria decided to share her story in hopes of helping others.

Maria is involved with several cancer organizations, and as a Filipino, she especially wants young Asian American Women to know that getting diagnosed with cancer can happen to them but that early detection is critical.

Maria is also involved with many other community organizations such as the Asian Festival, The Columbus International Program, The National Kidney Foundation, and At The Table.

Maria is married and they have a son.

Doctor Samilia Obeng-Gyasi

Guest Speaker & Medical Expert

Dr. Samilia Obeng-Gyasi is a breast surgical oncologist and associate professor of surgery at The Ohio State University. Her practice focuses on surgery for breast cancer and benign breast diseases. She obtained her BS in Biology (with highest distinction and departmental honors) from Indiana University-Bloomington and her MD from The University of Michigan.  She completed her general surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic, and a Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) accredited breast surgical oncology fellowship at Duke University.  Due to her interest in health services research, after finishing her residency, she completed a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health with a focus on quantitative research methods.  As a health services researcher with an emphasis on health equity, the overarching goal of her work is to understand how ancestry, race, social determinants of health, and stress interact to influence cancer initiation, progression, and mortality.
