Maria Durant

Maria Durant, a former anchor and news personality at ABC6/FOX28, where she served for 26 years, has been appointed the new Director of Public Information at the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.  Maria is a six-time Award-winning journalist. In addition, she has received numerous Associated Press Awards.

A graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in Broadcast journalism and Political Science, little did Maria know she would someday become a news story herself.  In October 2006, Maria was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.  Instead of hiding her diagnosis, Maria decided to share her story in hopes of helping others.

Maria is involved with several cancer organizations, and as a Filipino, she especially wants young Asian American Women to know that getting diagnosed with cancer can happen to them, but that early detection is critical.

Maria is also involved with many other community organizations such as the Asian Festival, the Columbus International Program, the National Kidney Foundation, and At The Table.

Maria is married.  The couple has a son named Donovan. He is a student at Boston College.

Deepa Halaharvi, MD
Breast Surgeon   |   Breast Cancer Survivor

Dr. Deepa Halaharvi is a fellowship-trained, board-certified breast surgeon and breast cancer survivor. She graduated from Kansas City University in 2008 and went on to complete her General Surgery residency in 2013 at Doctor's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Dedicated to being a life-long learner, Dr. Halaharvi continued to master her skills by focusing on breast surgical oncology through a Fellowship program in 2014. Only eight months after completing her fellowship Dr. Halaharvi learned first-hand what it feels like to hear that words "You have breast cancer." Despite the different forms of crises, setbacks, and illness, Dr. Halaharvi realized she had the courage and resiliency to keep going using her voice and experience to help her patients. Now having seen both sides, as a breast cancer surgeon and breast cancer patient, Dr. Halaharvi has gained unique insight and perspective into what it is like to face breast cancer. She has since started The Breast Cancer Podcast, a YouTube channel, and social media outlets to help educate others about body-awareness and managing a breast cancer diagnosis. Dr. Halaharvi continues to challenge herself and others in learning new skills in order to achieve better outcomes and improve the patient experience.
